Evil and the Justice of God

Merit Award, 2007 Christianity Today Theology/Ethics Book With every earthquake and war, understanding the nature of evil and our response to it becomes more urgent. Evil is no longer the concern just of ministers and theologians but also of politicians and the media. We hear of child abuse, ethnic cleansing, AIDS, torture and terrorism, and rightfully we are shocked. But, N. T. Wright says, we should not be surprised. For too long we have naively believed in the modern idea of human progress. In contrast, postmodern thinkers have rightly argued that evil is real, powerful and important, but they give no real clue as to what we should do about it. In fact, evil is more serious than either our culture or our theology has supposed. How then might Jesus' death be the culmination of the Old Testament solution to evil but on a wider and deeper scale than most imagine? Can we possibly envision a world in which we are delivered from evil? How might we work toward such a future through prayer and justice in the present? These are the powerful and pressing themes that N. T. Wright addresses in this book that is at once timely and timeless.

You almost are never disappointed in an NT Wright book. This is no different. Great topic, wonderful insights, and always an entertaining read. I would say its only flaw, and why I gave it 4 stars, is because he completely sidesteps the problem of evil in its traditional form. In other words, although he does a great job of saying HOW God fights evil, he doesn't even attempt to explain how it got there in the first place. Partly that may be because he, and many other theologians, simply don't have the confidence to grapple with evolutionary biology and the implications of a God who created a world that included predators from way back (can anyone say T Rex?). But to me that's forgivable, because nobody has solved that question satisfactorily anyway.Buy the book, you won't be disappointed. It inspired me to buy "How God became King" which I'll also review when I'm finished (halfway though it now).

Wright has this way of clarifying what had seemed muddled and incomplete in my understanding of the New Testament as he connects Biblical themes. He does it here again on evil and God's justice, as usual sticking with basic, down-to-earth exegesis that moves easily between Christian texts and their Jewish background. Here, his take on evil is illuminating, especially his brief, but thorough critique of modern philosophy's inability to rightly name evil for what it is and to establish that none of us are free from collaborating in it.Once again, he highlights God's intention to redeem this creation rather than abandon it for some "heaven" somewhere else. The central element of that redemption is the forgiveness we receive and need to pass along, to others and to ourselves, even while we understand that evil has many faces, including our own sometimes. He does not shy away from describing God's justice as judgment against any of us participating in the evil that God confronts and defeats. The only weak point in the book was when he began to apply it to real life situations. His examples just lacked the vigor and clarity of the rest of his book. But, I've already recommended the book to a friend a my church who was hungry for something thoughtful on this topic.

I have no doubt that our world is filled with evil - from wars to starvation to massive immigration due to hatred and war. These are the things that we initially think of when we talk about evil. However, I also have no doubt that we - individually - encounter evil on a daily basis. The question becomes how to recognize it, how to respond to it, how to avoid it, how to use the power of good to overcome evil. N T Wright is challenging in his concepts, thoughts, challenges. And he is the first individual to talk about it - with references to Old Testament and New Testament, to individuals such as Cain and Jesus. As Jesus went into the desert for 40 days to encounter the devil, so we too must know that we will encounter the devil in our life's own deserts. Ultimately how do we support each other so as not to succumb to evil? The Holy Spirit helps us recognize evil and supports us in our encounters with evil.

I read this after the wife of an acquaintance was gunned down in front of her husband and child. This book profoundly impacted how I was able to deal with the presence of evil in this world. While we debate the origins of evil, Wright redirects our attention to what God is doing about it.

Anything that lifts and edifies the life of Christ will always be in my " 5 star ~ I love it " category, It matters not 'how' you come to surrender your life to Christ, it only matters that you DO, Keep searching for Him, and you will be found, for He has promised he would not lose one of the ones He's been given. God bless your searching soul - Amen.

What is evil? What is Justice? Two very complicated but related ideas or thoughts. The author does an excellent job in defining both in relation to God and our selves. Deep thoughts on the both subjects but worth reading.

Wright does not address the "why" of evil (because he, rightly in my opinion, states that Scripture is silent on the matter) as much as he addresses the "what" of evil: what God has decisively done and will do about evil, specifically through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The book raises many good, thought-provoking questions while offering a cursory overview of the subject and inviting further exploration by the reader.

N. T. Wright summarizes the subject of evil in the world, and how God allows it, and what he has done and is doing about its continuing presence. This is not an exhaustive treatment of the subject, but it is certainly a provacative and well thought out discussion of evil. Wright says that he was attempting to deal with the meaning of the cross and found that he had to deal with the subject of what does the cross do about evil? This book starts out by recognizing and pointing out some of the obvious problems of evil in the world. He shows that evil is not just found in so-called evil people, but runs potentially down the middle of all of us. He also shows how that evil is in the world as exemplified by such things as earthquakes, hurricanes, and tsunamis. Bishop Wright the biblical origins of evil by beginning in Genesis and then carrying the thread throughout the Hebrew Scriptures and then the New Testament. He asks the question, what can God do about evil? He speaks of the cross, resurrection, and life in the Spirit as being God's reversal of evil in God's New Creation that began according to John 20:1 "Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark..." when Mary came to the tomb and found it empty. The author in no way encourages Christians to ignore the problem of evil, but rather invites us to imagine a world without evil and to pray for God's will to be done on earth as it is in Heaven and deliver us from evil. This is not a light weight treatment of the subject, but this book is not difficult reading. There is not any highly technical language so anyone could read and understand this book. I recommend it highly. God bless.
