Great story. As an American it was good to see the Canadian perspective of the treatment of the Canadian Japanese. The dual life paths of the grand parents was delightful. I had trouble keeping tract of the forebears, Japanese names do not stick in my mind as well as others. I have the same difficulty with a Polish mystery series. The author's mother's life was well documented and very realistic. When I finished reading I went again to the prologue and it was a lovely wrap up to the novel.
Mark Sakamoto writes a vivid and detailed story of the parallel lives of his grandparents during World War 2... One side Japanese Canadians ripped from their west coast homes by fear and prejudice, deposited in the prairies to suffer the hardship of survival with the only support to be found is the love of family. On the other side, a Scottish Canadian grandfather raised in austerity on the other side of Canada, who as a young man full of bravado and escaping a cruel father, joins the military. There he is assign a hopeless mission that ends in brutal incarceration in a Japanese prison camp and later as slave labor in Japan. Shear force of will was often the only barrier from death. The stories eventually intertwine ...and that is the rest of Sakamoto's story...the sources of his strengths and his challenges and the content of his character.....lessons for all of us.
Mr. Sakamoto has written a family saga which documents important moments in Canada's history: Canadian Soldiers in the Pacific Theatre WWII; along side The Dispossession and Exploitation of Japanese Canadians in WWII. One of the character traits of Albertans is that we know how to not talk about the stuff that we are content to hide from. Mark's book took courage to write, and it took courage for he and his family to live it.
Fascinating and shameful history of Canada treatment of the Japanese. There is so much more to the story both before and after the internments, that we should all know. It is fascinating. Ralph's story of his capture by the Japanese is horrific. The book is a testament to the best and worst of our nature's, personally and as a nation and a reminder of what humanity is capable of. It reads like a memoire and so the style is somewhat uneven but always very personal and honest. I loved it.
A wonderful true story of love and forgiveness on many levels. It shows how forgiveness can conquer evil and hate.
This is a great book, far exceeded expectations.
While at this moment I haven't read completely through the book, I instantly loved it. It gives a thorough history of a very sad time, and it is extremely well written. You will not be sorry you bought this!
