Shakespeare and the Resistance

Shakespeare's largely misunderstood narrative poems contain within them an explosive commentary on the political storms convulsing his country.

The 1590s were bleak years for England. The queen was old, the succession unclear, and the treasury empty after decades of war. Amid the rising tension, William Shakespeare published a pair of poems dedicated to the young earl of Southampton: Venus and Adonis in 1593 and The Rape of Lucrece a year later. Â

Although wildly popular during Shakespeare's lifetime, to modern people, both works are almost impenetrable. But in her enthralling new audiobook, the Shakespearean scholar Clare Asquith reveals their hidden contents: two politically charged allegories of Tudor tyranny that justified - and even urged - direct action against an unpopular regime. The poems were Shakespeare's best-selling works in his lifetime, evidence that they spoke clearly to England's wounded populace and disaffected nobility and especially to their champion, the earl of Essex.

Shakespeare and the Resistance unearths Shakespeare's own analysis of a political and religious crisis that would shortly erupt in armed rebellion on the streets of London. Using the latest historical research, it resurrects the story of a bold bid for freedom of conscience and an end to corruption that was erased from history by the men who suppressed it. This compelling work situates Shakespeare at the heart of the resistance movement.

Anyone who loves Shakespeare (and/or history) should heartily enjoy this analysis of Shakespeare's two long-forgotten poems, Venus and Adonis and Rape of Lucrece, The author sets both in the historical context of the late 16th century, 1593 and 1594, respectively, to be precise.Meanwhile, she also discusses some rather interesting portraits of the same period, more or less, including a 1603 John Critz portrait of a 34-year-old Henry Wriothesley, the Earl of Southhampton, and two of Rembrandt's early 1660s portraits of a woman purportedly in the act of committing suicide, both of which would have been easily recognizable to Elizabethan era viewers as Lucretia, the wife of Collatinus. How these fit into the puzzle pieced together in this fascination historical literary analysis is quite riveting for anyone with any interest in art.I am not a Shakespearean scholar, but certainly I am a lover of Shakespeare, and I am particularly fond of his history plays, which in light of this new discussion take on whole new levels of meaning. Why was Lucretia so fascinating to Shakespeare and his contemporaries. Ah, therein lies the story. And a fascinating tale it is, indeed.Any lover of literature and history should definitely pick up this book!

In writing this fascinating treatise, Clare Asquith faced a number of problems both common to and problematic with, literary historians.First she is dealing with some of the most, and, some might argue most deservedly obscure of the Bard's works (not THE most, not as long as there is "Cymbeline") and second she needs to put it into a highly complex and not a little baffling, historical momentShe solves both these dilemmas by the very clever trick of being a consistently graceful, witty, amusing, and entertaining scholarBy the time we have finished this brief, but quite complete, historical work we know what both of Shakespeare's narrative poems are bout about and "about" and their place in the history that surrounds them. And while I think there are several points on which one (well, this one,) can quibble, one cannot help but regale in and enjoy and be enthralled by this wonderful work

In most countries in today’s world, those who comment on current events rarely use the tools that were employed centuries ago by poets and creators of literature. The specters of exile and death were ever-present, and those who wished to express their rebellious thoughts were forced to mask them within their creative works. William Shakespeare was no different.Author Clare Asquith presents the question why two of Shakespeare’s sonnets were some of this bestselling works at the time of his death, yet over time have fallen so far as to be considered some of his most boring. The answer takes into account that over the last twenty years opinions hve changed, and it is now believed that English citizens considered Tudor Kings and Queens to be tyrannical.Ms. Asquith offers a lively presentation of the political pushback in art and written works previous to and during William Shakespeare’s time, exposing the cleverness necessary to be able to present ideas that would have meant death if spoken openly. History lovers, along with students of Shakespeare, should find this book fascinating and illuminative. The author explains why Shakespeare’s “The Rape of Lucrece” and “Venus and Adonis” were not merely poems, but bold comments attacking Tudor tyranny. At the same time, she shares an intimate glimpse into the political history of England over 400 years ago. Entertaining and enlightening. Five stars. My thanks to NetGalley and Perseus Books for an advance complimentary copy of this book.

I have always enjoyed Shakespearean literature for what it is. I have particular favorite plays for particular reasons, and I’ll be quite honest. I am a historian by trade, and tend to love the plays that involve the historic kings and queens of England.I’ve read a bit about the man himself, a biography here and there. So I thought I knew a fair amount about him and his work when I picked up this book. I think that’s how many people felt when they selected it.But, the author asserts, there was a different side to Shakespeare than we all know. He apparently had his rebellious side, and like many writers of his day he used allegory to fire shots at the kings and queens in power during his lifetime. Recent research suggests that two poems he wrote that we’ve all shrugged off as indecipherable and rambling, were actually attacks on the royals and their actions as they pertained to religious tolerance during the middle and end of the 16th century.Does it change the entire canon? Do we have to re-examine and redefine Shakespeare’s entire body of work? No. But it does open the door to reinterpretation of all his work. We may find nothing new, but the possibility now exists.
